The Draft
This past Saturday was our Fantasy Football Draft. Now there is still a large majority of the world that does not understand the importance of this each year, and will compare Fantasy Football to the likes of those geeks who enjoy Dungeons & Dragons etc. Well those people are DEAD WRONG!, cause unlike D&D, Fantasy Football is super awesome cool and kicks ass!
Our league has been in existence since 1998, at 12 people since 1999. So thats 9 years of history! Draft Day is the biggest day of the football calendar since it's where you either donate your entry fee with bad & unlucky picks or you give yourself a chance to make a run for money... but the money has very little to actually do with it, our league Trophy is the real prize and the bragging rights that go along with it over those other 11 guys is priceless.
Life gets in the way sometimes though... and for 3 years now we have failed to get 12 of us in the same room. One year it was a guy in a hotel room via the company phone bill making his draft picks, another 2 guys huddled around a phone who couldn't make the trip 2 years ago, and last year a different guy, a different long distance phone call. We set a specific date this year, at last years draft, giving us ample time to make other plans should something come up on that day. Well, a lot of people didn't get the memo. 4 kids were born in that time, and one more is on the way. (3 of those kids belong to one guy!!!) 5 people have moved houses in that span, 3 are in the process of closing houses right now, and an impromptu family trip, an impromptu surgery and guess what... the date originally set no longer worked. So after quite an arduous time trying to make it happen still, we decided this past Saturday, late at night would work. Life ALMOST got in the way of that as well. 1 guy shook off his wife getting food poisoned with a 2 month old at home (she felt better after a good afternoon sleep) he made it... and the other guy actually made his first round selection from an emergency room, his second selection from his cell phone while driving, and after blowing the ligaments in his knee playing rugby, a long but useless hospital visit, a painful drive across the 407, he made it in time for the last 14 rounds. For the first time in a very long time, all 12 of us in the same room, a few worse for wear, but there.
So thanks to those 12 guys for sure, it's not easy, but as you can guess it's important to us - and it all worked out. Maybe next year it will be easier. Maybe not...
Check out this video which I think is very fitting:
